A routine traffic stop turned into a tragedy in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen on Wednesday evening. A driver attempting to evade police control lost control of their carsharing vehicle, resulting in a severe crash that left a cyclist with life-threa...
The incident occurred late Wednesday evening when police attempted to conduct a traffic check on a carsharing vehicle in the Gesundbrunnen district of Berlin. The driver abruptly accelerated, attempting to escape the check. According to the Berlin Fire Department, the vehicle veered "with a sweeping motion" off the road, mounted the pavement on Brunnenstraße, and collided forcefully with a building.
The impact trapped a female cyclist beneath the car. Police officers and passersby acted quickly to free her and administer first aid before paramedics arrived. Due to the number of people involved, the Berlin Fire Department declared a "mass casualty incident" (Massenanfall an Verletzten) to ensure sufficient resources were dispatched.
In total, emergency medical personnel assessed eight people at the scene. Besides the critically injured cyclist, five people sustained minor injuries (including a police officer and two car occupants) and required hospital treatment. Two additional individuals received psychological support on site.
The fire department deployed a significant response, including 60 personnel, 22 vehicles, multiple ambulances, an emergency doctor, and an intensive care transport helicopter. After securing the scene and ensuring there was no fire risk, the area was handed over to the police, who have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances leading to the crash.
